Developmentally Appropriate

Everything we do needs to be appropriate for the age and ability of our players

Clear, Concise, Correct Information

Keep it short and sweet

Simple to Complex

Start with the basics and only when you are sure they can handle it, increase the difficulty

No Lines

Our players deserve more than some boring line to stand in

When 90% of the team are standing around watching, children lose interest, focus, and enjoyment

If you need to set up a game with lines, run multiple games at once

If you have an assistant or another person to help, use them

No Lectures

Keep it clear, concise and easy to understand

Explain the game, and let them play

If you have a point to make, do it quickly, and get them playing again

No Laps

We want these children playing, not running around in a circle

There is no need to “punish” players at this age. Just keep them focused and let them play

For a warm up or cool down, let them run around each other with a ball

Guided Discovery

This is the art of asking meaningful questions that actively involve players in the learning process. Remember, our goal is to encourage better decision making.

Low order questions

What part of the foot do you use to make a short pass?

Where should you aim when shooting on goal?

High order questions

How can we get the ball down the field quickly?

Why should we play high-pressure defense?

Slanty Line Theory

All children have the right to participate in activities at their own ability level

Children will not continue activities in which they are continually eliminated or wait to take turns

Given opportunities, children seek out challenges and take risks

Coaching Philosophy

Your unique coaching philosophy

Motivation

Experiences

Beliefs

Methods
